National Campaign to Visit New Mexico to Spotlight Districts Implementing High-Quality Math Curricula

The Knowledge Matters Campaign is excited to announce an upcoming tour of two school districts implementing hiqh-quality mathematics curriculum in New Mexico. This is the campaign’s first visit to the state, which is part of a network of 13 states being supported by the Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO) in making the shift to high quality instructional materials adoption.

The Knowledge Matters School Tour visit is the culmination of the New Mexico Public Education Department’s yearlong “Math Is Me” initiative which highlights how math is used in everyday life and encourages all students to see themselves as math capable.

“We want every New Mexico student to see themselves as a mathematician and that starts with equitable math instruction,” New Mexico Public Education Cabinet Secretary Arsenio Romero said. “High-quality mathematics instructional materials and teachers well-supported in their use means that all students will have access to evidence-based practices and the opportunity to meet the demands of their future. We are thrilled to have the Knowledge Matters Campaign spotlight our districts that are models of successful implementation of great instructional materials.”

“The Knowledge Matters Campaign’s visit to New Mexico will showcase growing enthusiasm in the state for high-quality instructional materials and the support they can provide to teachers,” said Barbara Davidson, executive director of the Knowledge Matters Campaign. “As part of the IMPD Network, New Mexico has made a commitment to supporting implementation of high-quality curricula, reaching at-risk students, and providing professional development opportunities. We look forward to shining a light on their efforts.”

The following districts are currently scheduled to be visited. Media is invited on all School Tour visits.

  • Mesa Vista Consolidated Schools: April 18-19, 2023 – Zearn Math
  • Rio Rancho Public Schools: April 24-25, 2023 – Eureka Math

The Knowledge Matters School Tour – whose motto is to “find the good and praise it” – generates national awareness for states and districts implementing high-quality, knowledge-building curricula. Since 2018, the tour has visited over 35 districts across the country. These visits to New Mexico represent the second math-focused school tour for the campaign. In 2022, the campaign visited three school districts in Delaware implementing high-quality math curricula.

The Knowledge Matters Campaign is a project of StandardsWork, a non-profit advocacy organization that focuses on identifying high-impact levers that produce academic improvements, specifically the vital role curriculum plays in supporting teaching excellence, the importance of building deep background knowledge in students, and the “octane” that specific evidence-based instructional practices can provide. Through media campaigns, publications, blogs, and thought leadership, StandardsWork highlights the benefits of high-quality curriculum adoption and implementation, promotes research on the “curriculum effect,” and elevates educator voices in support of a curriculum renaissance.
